Common Scams Used By Bad Credit Repair Companies

Use caution if the agency that you are about to hire suggests that you apply for a new identity. There are a couple of different ways of doing this–all are illegal. If you choose to go along, you can and most likely will be convicted of fraud.

Avoid a company that doesn’t state either on their website, in their contract or over the phone to you that you can do the work yourself without a credit repair agency and in fact it is your right. You have the ability to get the same results that an agency can get. Most people use a credit repair agency because they are too pressed for time to do the work themselves or they just feel that they don’t have the knowledge necessary to be effective.

Some credit repair agencies are successful because of their pressure tactics. If you are somewhat leery of doing the work for yourself, they can often times pick up on this and rip what confidence you do have, to shreds. Research the company and read every word of the contract carefully. If you have that gut feeling that something is wrong or that you are being pushed into something that you are not sure of, simply say no. You are not obligated to do anything.

I love reading ads for credit repair agencies that offer instant credit repair or in one case, to raise the credit score by 100 points in 10 days. The fact of the matter is this: if the item that you are disputing is accurate, verifiable and timely, the information will stay on your credit report for 7 years from the first date of delinquency. Credit repair agencies have been notorious in the past for flooding the credit bureaus with hundreds of disputes to the point where it became virtually impossible to respond within the allotted 30 days. The credit bureaus caught on to this and this tactic no longer works. The item can be added back onto the credit report.

Don’t fall for credit repair agencies that suggest you apply for a new identity, don’t disclose your rights as a consumer, pressure you or promise things that they can’t possibly deliver. Do your research and trust your gut.
