Very often, people ask me to provide them with one piece of advice that could help them to be more successful with their money.
Over the years I have learnt that there isnt just one method to effectively manage your finances, create wealth, or preserve your money for the future. In fact, there are several steps which, when combined, can put you on a solid financial footing.
Here are eight guidelines that can help you successfully traverse the road to financial freedom:
Live Within Your Means
This principle, which encourages you to only spend what you earn, will keep you away from most money problems. However, this task will be difficult to accomplish without first being aware of all your expenses, and calculating if your income will be sufficient to pay for them. Budgeting is essential for financial success as it helps you to see where you may need to reduce your spending in line with your earnings, or if you need to find ways to increase your income to meet your requirements.

As prom was approaching, my son asked if he could attend both here at his new high school and an few hours away at his former high school. Guilt plagued me as I weighed this question. We had ripped him from his high school friends at the beginning of his junior year, and it seemed important for him to celebrate with them as well as his new friends. As I mulled this over, my tightwad nature sprang up. As tight as things have been, how could we manage two proms? He had recently found a job, but his first paycheck would not arrive until after these events were over.
He already owned an all-black tuxedo we had purchased during a 50% off sale for his saxophone performances at school. He wanted to wear his tuxedo, but he wanted to dress it up. I agreed with him that we could kick it up a notch with some additions.
His idea was to purchase or rent a white tuxedo coat and have all the other items black including the vest, standard tie, and shirt. We would need to purchase the white tuxedo coat (the most expensive purchase) and a vest and tie set.

When it comes to grocery shopping try to buy only what you need, it’s very easy to be tempted when shopping. Try to only shop when you have a list of what you need as we tend to go for one item and end up buying a list of unnecessary things. Shopping on days that there are sales and bulk buying when there is a sale is a good thing to put into practice. Waiting for a particular item you have been wanting to go on sale can be a great saving and be sure to check your catalogues and see if another store has those items at a cheaper price that week.

Many people think that once they retire budgeting their money is going to be a lot harder, this is a common misconception that can cause a lot of stress during a time when people are supposed to be relaxing. When you are budgeting your money before you retire you are planning for your monetary needs at that time but also for when you retire. Once you retire you are budgeting your money to make sure you have enough money to last you for the rest of your life. If you really analyze the situation, it seems that budgeting your money after retirement is much easier than before.
Before even setting up a budget for retirement you have to consider a few things. The first one being where are you planning on living when you retire. Retirement costs can range tremendously depending on where you decide you are going to live, for many people the costs can be lowered by moving to a place such as Florida, where the cost of living is much lower. The houses in Florida are normally less expensive than in other parts of the country, the cost of living is also much lower in Florida, which is one reason why many retirees move there once their work days are over. You must really look at where you want to live and the costs associated with living there, the last thing you want to do is make a mistake on where you are going to be living for the rest of your life.

The cost of living in a city increases almost everyday. With just the average rent of a two room New York City apartment costing more than $4,000, no wonder more people than ever are budgeting their money and looking for more inexpensive ways to live. Cities become even more expensive if you are traveling to locations around the city that you need to get transportation to. The cost of a cab can become very expensive if you are sitting in traffic, but by owning a car in the city it can be just as expensive with the high costs of gasoline and the amount of traffic in the city.
One way that people all over the country who live in the city are budgeting their money is by taking public transportation. Public transportation is available in every city whether it is through train, boat, or through riding an underground subway. You can buy relatively low weekly passes to all public transportation in the city, and the great part about it is that it virtually pays for itself because when you live in the city, you virtually have to travel to get anywhere. With more and more people migrating to live in the city public transportation is becoming much more accepted than it once was, and besides it saving money it also helps the environment by cutting down on the huge carbon footprint that cities put on the environment. There is no better time than now to begin using public transportation.

Going green is a phrase that is all over the place today, whether it is in the news or being talked about in schools. The whole idea of going green is trying to make our world more environmentally friendly, and during an economic crisis like the one we are in going green can also help save money. Many people have the common misconception that the only way to go green is by purchasing products that are better for the environment, as a result of this many people don’t do this because their budgets don’t allow. This is incorrect and here are some ways that you can go green without breaking down your budgets.
One way that you can go green while saving money is by changing the type of light bulb that you use. Many light bulbs that are used in homes today use three times the amount of energy that a compact fluorescent light bulb uses. By purchasing compact fluorescent light bulbs your monthly budgets will never suffer because purchasing them can save you as much as $800 dollars in your lifetime. Also, because compact fluorescent light bulbs use less energy they also produce half as much heat as standard light bulbs, which can decrease the amount of heat during those hot summer months. Using these light bulbs eliminates greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere and in turn decreasing your carbon footprint on the atmosphere.

Many people have dreams of eventually starting up their own company one day. The idea of being your own boss for a job of your dreams is one of the reasons why many people decide to follow this path, but what may start out as a dream may turn up being a financial disaster if you don’t budget your money. With every story of success, there are five stories of financial disaster of businesses that didn’t work out. Many of the financial hardships that people experience while starting up their own company can be avoided by using a simple budget when planning on money you will need to spend.
One of the most important things to do before starting your own business is to research the market you are interested in getting into. The failure of most new businesses can most commonly be contributed to the owner not doing enough research about the market they are going to enter. You need to carefully analyze the market you are trying to enter and figure out who are the main businesses’ in it and how you will compare. You must use realistic standards when doing this; you can’t expect as a new business owner that you are going to make a profit during your first year. With that you have to take into effect that in reality you may not make a profit your first year, and for most new company’s backup funds are essential to continuing the new business. You also have to ask yourself what you want to get out of your new business, in order to do this you not only have to make short-term goals but also long term goals. Making a budget for short-term and long-term goals will allow you to see your future spending in a big picture.

Somehow your children have finally convinced you to purchase a swimming pool for your house, they are ecstatic and can’t wait for it to be finished, but all you can think about is how costly this project may end up being. The most important part of this process is allotting yourself a specific amount that you are willing to spend on the pool. The easiest way to do this is by setting up budgets for every aspect of the project. This includes the size, area, and type of pool that you want to purchase. By setting strict budgets for each part of the project you will never fail to stay within your price range, one important factor to keep in mind when setting your price ranges is to leave a little bit of room for costs that may go over.
One thing to keep in mind when creating budgets for the installation process is to make sure the location that you choose for your swimming pool correlates with the price you want to pay. Keep in mind the location that you want to put your pool has to be flat, make sure that you add in additional prices that might be needed in order to make the land appropriate for installment. Also, as far as location is concerned there are also legal safety requirements that you must abide by in order to have your pool be legally safe. One of the legal safety requirements is that the pool has to be surrounded by a fence that locks in order to keep children from falling in and drowning. There also needs to be locations for pumps and filters to be stored which can cost additional money.
