Scholarship For Mothers Program - Creating Better Lives

Did you know that after President Obama took his oath, he already encouraged mothers to go back to school and earn a degree? To make this possible, the President also pushed for the enhancement of the Federal Pell Grant’s terms and the scholarship for the mother program. Higher education is one of the programs of the current administration and because of this, more and more mothers are now thinking of obtaining a degree in college.

Student’s loans are very much different from the scholarships and grants. The latter is aimed solely for students and mothers, who can’t afford to attend school, without such form of assistance. Single mothers are great candidates, especially the ones earning very low incomes and have custody over the children.

Published: Feb 8th, 2010 | Author: Alex Bhaswara Add Comment

Many single mothers think that once you qualify and receive financial aid that you are free and clear. While that is true in some cases, in others you may be forced to repay part or all of your financial assistance. Here are some of the common rules and regulations for receiving financial aid, such as Pell grants. The amount of assistance you receive from your Pell grant is based on your income. They use your EFC, or expected family contribution, to determine how much money you will receive from the government. If your award letter from your university states that you will receive $5000, don’t expect to instantly get handed a check.

That $5,000 figure is based on you going to school full time, registered with at least 12 college credit hours. What if you just want to take six hours? You would receive 50% of your award, as six hours is considered half time. Taking ¼ time, or 3 hours, would get you $1250. Going ¾ time would get you 75% of your $5,000 award, or $3750. If you drop a class and go from full time to ¾ time expect to have to pay back the difference. If you drop all of your classes expect to pay back all of your Pell grant money. In some cases, like if you can’t afford to give part of your award money back, it is better to fail a class than to drop.

As single mothers prepare to resume their college or pre-professional studies, they have to balance and multi-task like perfect machines: How will you reconcile the demands of school with the demands of work and children? How will you manage your time, assuring you have adequate time for homework and decent preparation for class? You must remember that college study requires three hours of study outside class for every hour you spend in class; how will you carve that time from your already crowded schedule? How will you manage your money? Even with financial aid, your finances will be tight; how will you work it out?

As you work-out all these difficult calculations, you must decide which school and which program is right for you. The experts call it “institutional fit,” and it measures how well your school-of-choice really will match you, your needs and ambitions. The institutional fit has at least four dimensions:

· Geographic fit- Single mothers need schools that fit with their transportation options. Community colleges offer convenient, economical alternatives for mothers who cannot see the wisdom or purpose of going away to a four-year school. Other factors influence this choice, too: Where is school in relation to daycare? Where is school in relation to the places you shop, work, and take care of business? How often can you rely on public transportation for rides to and from school? How do all the transportation costs break down?

In 2008 and 2009, more than 80% of African-American babies were born to single mothers. During that same period, nearly 2/3 of Latino babies were delivered by mothers who don’t have a partner with them. Reliable studies indicate that the vast preponderance of these women remained single by choice, feeling they could not rely on the babies’ fathers to provide for them financially or emotionally.

Single mothers especially cited fathers’ educational disadvantage as their principal source of concern: only 14% of ethnic students finish high school and advance to higher education, and nearly half of Latino and African-American males leave high school without diplomas. Such mothers who are single recognize higher education as the most efficient and effective vehicle for upward social mobility, and they gravitate to online colleges and universities for degrees and pre-professional training, because they can complete their courses while they work full-time and care for their children.
